Quick and Fun Home Recipes for the Kids

Cooking with kids is a great way to entertain them and teach them a few essential life skills. At Crestone Ridge, we encourage parents to try simple, easy, and delicious recipes to help kids develop an interest in cooking. Your new Yukon home has a full gourmet kitchen, you can use the space to have some fun with your children. Here are some ideas you can experiment with:
Breakfast Taco
This is a simple recipe but it is a great alternative to the more traditional pancakes or cereal. Here’s a look at what you need to do:
Warm eight taco shells in a 350° oven for around 5 minutes until they are crisp.
Crack six eggs into a bowl, season with salt, pepper, chili powder and add some taco seasoning if you have it. Whisk the mixture until everything is properly combined.
Heat a skillet and add two tablespoons of butter in the pan. Once it has melted and is bubbling, add the eggs and set the heat to low.
Stir the egg mixture and cook for around 3 to 4 minutes until the eggs are scrambled.
Make salsa with chopped tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and a dash of lemon.
Assemble the taco by placing around two tablespoons of scrambled eggs in the taco shell, adding some shredded cheese, and a spoon of the salsa.
This breakfast meal is simple, delicious, and your kids can help you make it. The dish is also very healthy, especially if you skip the cheese.
Homemade Bread
Baking is an art form and making a simple loaf of bread is the best way to introduce your child to the art. While baking takes time, it can teach a child the value of precision, patience, and care. Here’s a look at the recipe:
Mix around 1.5 cups of warmed whole milk, 2 tablespoons of sugar, ¼ ounce of active dry yeast, and 1 cup of all-purpose flour in a plastic Ziplock bag.
Squeeze all of the air out of the bag and seal it. Give it to your children to squish the mixture inside the bag until everything is properly combined. Let the bag rest for around 10 minutes until the mixture begins to bubble.
Add 2 tablespoons of melted butter and an additional 3.5 cups of all-purpose flour, and 1 tablespoon of fine salt into the mixture, reseal the bag and squish to combine again.
Once all of the ingredients are combined, roll the dough out to a floured surface and carefully knead it for around 5 minutes until it becomes soft and smooth.
Place the dough in a buttered 9/5 inch bread pan and cover it with a kitchen towel. Let the mixture rest until it has risen a couple of inches above the pan. This should take around 2 hours.
Preheat the oven at 375° and position the rack to the center. Bake the bread for around 35 minutes until it turns golden brown. Remove the loaf from the pan and place it on the rack for an additional 30 or so minutes of baking. The loaf should sound hollow when you tap it. Let it cool before slicing it.
